Antoon 'Rat' Verlegh was a valuable football player in the 1890s. NAC was in fact named after him. Aside from his remarkable skills in football, he was a great leader who went against the tides to promote football in challenging times.

He got a serious injury which took him seven months to recover yet after his recovery, he was back in the field again to play his favourite sport. He didn’t come back because he wanted to be in the limelight again. He came back because NAC at that time is facing a financial crisis. He knew that if he comes back, it would inspire people to support football again. He used his influence to bring back the glory of football once had. He was considered to be 50plusmatch, yet he proved that there’s nothing impossible with determination and hard work.
An Honest Leader
His career revolved around football. After retiring, he became a member of the board. When NAC was under water, Antoon was one of the members who fight against corruption within the organization. No elitedating could ever buy him. He knew that corruption would kill the sport, so he fought it with all his might just like how he fights during a football game.
A Great Coach and a Role Model
During his time, players would love to be under his wing. If he became your coach, you know that you are in good hands. He fostered positivity, ematching it with empathy and genuine love. When he died due to a car crash, Dutch football industry knew that they have lost a valuable person. His knowledge of football was uncomparable to anyone during his time. During his burial, people came and honoured him for all the things he contributed to the sport. The players whom he coached, lost a father. Even his death created an impact and inspired players, coaches, and football fans to continue what he started.
